FAQ

Please email us if your question is not answered below.

What is a font licence?

A Font Licence gives you the right to use specified Font Styles in certain ways. Fonts must be licensed for the different ways where they will be used. The Font Licence specifies the terms and conditions of use and forms the legally binding contract between you and The Letters in connection with the use of our fonts. The Licence Fee is a one-off cost for ongoing use of the Fonts in the relevant licenced manner. There are no recurring fees. Although you are required to obtain additional Font Licences if the use of our fonts expands into different Licence Categories, different Projects or different End User Clients. The fonts can be used worldwide and all licences have no expiry. It is important that you read and understand our T&C (which embody our Font Licences) before making a purchase with us. Please see further information about font licensing on our Font Licensing page.

Can I have trial fonts?

All of our fonts are available in a free Trial Fonts package. Our Trial Licence allows for you to use the fonts to test your concepts only. Please organise the appropriate Paid Licence with us if our fonts are going to be used in any way beyond testing.

Are your fonts of a high standard?

We are committed to the highest levels of font production. Our fonts are professionally engineered to work seamlessly across all platforms and to perform exceptionally in print and on screen. Our OpenType fonts contain a multitude of convenient features, such as automated case-sensitive punctuation and symbols, alternate figure sets and broad Latin-based language support to enhance your requirements.

Why are your Brand licences more expensive?

Our typefaces are conceptual and expressive. We believe our unique fonts add value to any design they are used with.

Can I purchase a font licence on behalf of my client?

All of our Paid Licences are attributed to the entity that the font will ultimately be associated with and the Licence Fees are calculated accordingly. The End User Client will be the entity that commissions the design work, often called ‘The Client’. The End User Client is not the commissioned agency, in-house individual, or freelance creative person producing the work. Please see the information about all available font licensing on our Font Licensing page.

Do you make custom fonts on commission?

Yes, our custom fonts are created especially to suit specific requirements. We believe a custom font is one of the strongest assets an organisation can utilise to create powerful brand relationships. The Letters director Mark Gowing incorporates his extensive design and fine arts experience to develop sensitive outcomes based on combinations of conceptual rigour and emotional understanding. Gowing is a master in the creation of key visual communication components such as custom typefaces, trademarks and logotypes, as well as expressive design experiences such as installations, imaging, posters and publications. Please email us if you would like to discuss potential commissions and collaborations.

Can you customise one of your retail fonts for me?

We would be happy to discuss the customisation of any of our fonts to meet your needs. Please email us if you would like to discuss potential commissions.

Can I change your fonts or use them as a template for creating my own?

Absolutely not. No one is permitted to open and alter our fonts. The intellectual property rights to our work remains with The Letters, and a third party opening and changing our fonts is a copyright infringement and an infringement of moral rights.

Can I get a student discount?

Sorry, we do not offer student discounts. Students are welcome to use our trial fonts for their studies. However, please obtain the appropriate licence if the work will be exhibited publicly, published, or shared on internet and social media platforms.

Can I share your fonts with other people?

Our fonts can be shared with End User Clients for use in connection with the specified Scope of Licence you have nominated at the time of purchasing a Paid Licence, but if any other third party would like access to our fonts, then they must obtain a Font Licence directly from us. You should ensure that End User Clients are fully aware of the Scope of Licence, so that they do not inadvertently use the Fonts in a manner that would result in a further Licence Fee being payable.

Can I share your Trial Fonts with my friends?

We ask that you do not pass on our Fonts. Each user should obtain a Trial Licence for our fonts directly from us.

Can I use a desktop licence on my website?

No. A Web Licence is required to enable you to embed that font in the code of a website. You may not circumnavigate this requirement by technological or other means.

I previously purchased font licences and have misplaced the font files. Can I download the files again?

Yes. Please email us and we will forward you a link.

Do you offer refunds?

Sorry, no. All font licensing sales are final.

Do you work with other typeface designers?

All of our fonts are designed in-house at our Sydney studio. However we employ outside designers for assistance and labour. We collaborated with Dave Foster of Foster Type on the Kapitol family, and Ben Kiel of XYZ Type is responsible for our font mastering.

Do you offer internships?

We’re a small company and are unable to take on interns at the moment.

Why design new fonts?

Stories are built from language. As long as we are using the written word to communicate and tell stories our cultures will need expressive typefaces to provide their visual voices. We endeavour to produce thoughtful new fonts to represent our times and the times ahead.

Can you include my work using your fonts on your website?

We love seeing what people design with our fonts! Please email us with examples of your work, or tag us on Instagram at @theletters.co.

Who built your website?

The website was designed and developed by the very wonderful Elle Williams Studio.
